SHD to exhibit at Farnborough Air Show
SHD Group has established itself as a leading global prepreg supplier, providing a range of application tailored products with a strong focus on new, more sustainable, composite material technologies for the aerospace sector. The SHD group of companies has purposely evolved to support its global customer base with the same range of high performance prepreg materials (developed for either press, oven or autoclave processing) from multiple manufacturing sites located in the UK, EU and USA.
Working in collaboration with partners certified for design (Part 21J), production (Part 21G) and Part 145 capabilities, SHD Group supplies prepregs for lightweight aerospace composite applications, prioritising sustainable materials. Our novel, bio-based FR308 prepreg replaces phenolics in cabin, eliminating hazardous chemicals and solvents. Compliant with 25.853 aircraft interior flame, smoke and toxicity requirements, FR308's improved surface finish reduces rework, lowers weight, and cuts manufacturing costs. Notably, Percival Aviation (UK) has used FR308 for overhead bins in Boeing 757s, allowing for lengthwise luggage storage, whilst also incorporating FR308 for the manufacture of a wash basin door of an Airbus A320 aircraft.
SHD Group’s unique PS200 bio-derived prepreg system has been chosen by Albatross Fly d.o.o. (Slovenia) for the construction of battery boxes supplied for the serial production of FES (Front Electric Sustainer) electric propulsion systems. The application of SHD’s PS200 in the construction of the FES battery box has enabled the development of a very lightweight and compact propulsion system, while providing remarkable protection against the potential for very high temperatures, pressures and fire that would be seen in the event of a battery thermal runaway reaction. As a result, the FES system has achieved the necessary EASA Type Certification.
In a recent collaboration with SHD, JCB Aero (France) developed floorboard panels for the MRO market compliant with BMS4-17/20/23 standards. Tested for full conformance with aircraft interiors standards, SHD’s FRVC411 is a toughened, flame-retardant epoxy resin system designed to cure between 65°C and 140°C allowing flexibility in component manufacture for aircraft interior applications. These lightweight, high-strength panels using SHD's prepreg significantly reduce weight and manufacturing costs and are installable on 95% of Boeing cabins. Read more here.
To highlight the importance of the aerospace sector to SHD’s future growth plans, the company will be first time exhibitors on the joint NWAA / Composites UK pavilion at the 2024 Farnborough Airshow, where the SHD team will, in particular, be sharing the company’s developments in the vital area of increased sustainability and material circularity.
Come and visit the team on the Composites UK pavilion (Hall 1/Stand 1307) between 22-26 July 2024!
